Description

PROPERTIES:

BARKATRIM is an antibacterial. It is a mixture of the sulphonamide Sulphamethoxazole with Trimethoprim in the proportions (5: 1).

The two antibiotics act synergistically to produce abacteriostatic action against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

BARKATRIM blocks two consecutive steps in the biosynthesis of nucleic acids and proteins essential to many bacteria.

INDICATIONS:

  • Respiratory tract infections: acute and chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, pneumonia, pharyngitis, sinusitis and otitis media.
  • Urinary tract infections: acute and chronic cystitis, pylonephritis, urethritis and prostatitis.

CONTRAINDICATIONS:

  • Hypersensitivity to sulphonamida.
  • Patients with severe renal, hepatic or blood disorders and patients with documented megaloblastic anemia.
  • Pregnancy and lactation.
  • Prenatal and newborn infants during six weeks of life.

SIDE EFFECTS:

It may cause: nausea, vomiting, stomatitis, skin rashes, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia and jaundice.

PRECAUTIONS:

  • Treatment should be discontinued immediately a rash appears because of the risk of severe allergic reaction.
  • Adequate fluid intake is necessary to reduce the risk of crystalluria.
  • Dosage should be reduced in renal impairment and elderly patients.

DRUG INTERACTIONS:

  • BARKATRIM may increase the effects of warfarin, phenytoin and digoxin.
  • BARKATRIM increases the hypoglycemic effect of sulphonylurin.
  • Should not be given to patients with reduced CCPD.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION:

Adults:

  • BARKATRIM: 2 tablets twice daily.
  • BARKATRIM FORT: 1 tablet twice daily.

Children:

  • 6 weeks to 5 months: 1 teaspoonful (2.5 ml) of BARKATRIM suspension twice daily.
  • 6 months to 5 years: 1 spoonful (5 ml) of BARKATRIM suspension twice daily.
  • 6 to 12 years: 2 spoonfuls (5 ml) of BARKATRIM suspension twice daily, or 1 spoonful ( 5 ml ) of BARKATRIM FORT suspension twice daily. Or 8mg/kg/day.
